Cunard Queen Elizabeth Cruise Ship Review First-hand Expert Review

cunard cruise reviews

Despite these issues, traveling on QM2 still feels like a special experience, and there's a feeling of quiet excitement onboard. Dressing for dinner is taken seriously, and passengers enjoy the romance of walking the Promenade Deck, dancing in the Queens Room and experiencing the Planetarium. And the thrill of approaching the New York port (if you're on a Cunard Queen Mary 2 westbound crossing) becomes progressively more palpable the nearer you get to the U.S. On recent crossings, the ship under delivered in some areas, notably the (un)helpfulness of a couple of crew members and the quality of food in the ship's main dining room, Britannia Restaurant, where the majority of passengers eat. Queen Victoria enjoyed a $40 million refurbishment in 2017, which involved slicing off the back of the ship to add 43 new cabins, and, in the process, increasing the size of the aft pool deck. The month-long refurb also saw the addition of a new dining room, a new specialist café and significant refurbishments to five Penthouse Suites and four Grand Suites.

At the same time, it provides the expected conveniences of modern times like computer lounges and plenty of shopping opportunities. Queen Victoria attracts mainly couples -- both straight and gay -- and a few single passengers. To that end, the ship offers singles meet-ups including coffee mornings. It is not really a family-oriented ship, although it does offer excellent kids' facilities. To sum up, Queen Victoria is a comfortable, graceful cruise ship best suited to couples, single travelers and mature cruisers.

Very good all round cruise apart from some of the food

On a seven-night cruise, there are two formal nights; longer cruises will have three or four. Some have a theme, such as the Black and White Ball, a Cunard tradition that includes the classic 'Officers Gavotte' dance. Dress code for these formal nights translates as dinner jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with tie for men, and a range of men's formalwear is available to hire onboard for anyone who does not wish to bring his own.

For ladies, formal nights mean evening or cocktail dress. Many ladies go all out to impress by wearing floor-length gowns covered in sparkles or sequins; some wear fascinators in their hair, carry glittery evening bags and are adorned with plenty of look-at-me jewelery. Ninety percent of passengers adhere to the dress code on formal nights, which is as it should be; this ship is elegant and guests enjoy looking their best as part of that experience. Other evenings are designated 'informal', which on Cunard does not mean passengers can turn up wearing anything they choose. For men, a jacket is essential, and although a tie is optional, many older men still wear one.

Do not expect even the slightest hint of neon or glitz nor -- perish the thought -- rock climbing walls or bumper cars. Luxurious furnishings and eye-catching features lend an air of extravagance to the onboard atmosphere with muted colors and lots of dark wood. Architecture is in keeping with the ambiance of Cunard ocean liners of times past while the interior design offers the contemporary elegance of a modern luxury hotel.

They offer a range of itineraries, from short breaks to longer voyages to destinations such as the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the Caribbean. QM2 has one of the most rigorous and formal dress codes at sea. This is a ship where passengers appreciate formality; even informal nights require jackets and dresses.

If dressing up isn't your thing, it's not the ship for you, unless you are OK being restricted to the buffet at night. Although most people may immediately think of relaxing transatlantic voyages when imagining a trip on QM2, Cunard’s flagship vessel offers a wide range of itineraries. Sometimes combined with New York-to-Southampton crossings, 7-night Mediterranean itineraries offer an overview of the region with ports of call in Spain and Italy, including Sardinia. You'll have to be dressed up to visit anywhere else onboard, including the theater. For first-timer cruisers, Queen Victoria is a good choice.

A favorite area during the day, Carinthia Lounge felt lacking in character in the evenings, although the sophisticated tones and seating are a step up from the aged space it replaced. With daily news stories of delayed and canceled flights, lost baggage, and travelers stranded overseas in the middle of a natural disaster, it's ... Passengers wishing to dress more informally in the evening are recommended to dine in the Kings Court buffet and use the Carinthia Lounge. Sadly, with so much going for it, our biggest disappointment onboard came from the service -- a far cry from the touted standard of White Star Service we were expecting. Aside from a select few crew members who were exceptionally helpful or friendly, service onboard was surprisingly lacking. Cabin attendants seemed disinterested or downright depressed, staff bickered in the spa, bar managers reprimanded waiters loudly in front of passengers and servers seemed annoyed by simple requests.

MSC Cruises

One of the ship's signature features is the stunning three-tier Grand Lobby with its unique artwork, sweeping staircase and sculpted balconies. With a dramatic triple-height ceiling, the -lobby serves as a majestic focal point and is the center of onboard activity. It forms the core from which the ship's other public rooms flow. A bronzed-effect sculptural representation of the cruise ship emerging from a sun motif coordinated with a marquetry relief depicting a map of the world graces the staircase landing and is visible from nearly every part of the Grand Lobby. And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated.

We have done too many cruises to count with Cunard and this cruise out of Auckland for eight days and disembarking in Sydney did not disappoint. Apart from a few high-trafficked areas, like the buffet or close to the theater after a show, you'll never feel crowded on Queen Elizabeth; there are plenty of nooks and crannies to settle into and enjoy the quiet that comes with this style of cruising. If you've been feeling like you need a break from the rat race, a cruise on Queen Elizabeth offers you the chance to just sit and watch the world go by. Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

Many dyed-in-the-wool Cunarders wouldn't dream of sailing with anyone else. Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing. There is no limit to the glamor on formal nights, called gala evenings -- typically three on a 10-night sailing (two on Alaska voyages).

Online travel visa providers have revolutionized the way individuals apply for visas when planning their international trips. Our reviewers evaluate products and services based on unbiased research. Top Consumer Reviews may earn money when you click on a link. We enjoyed the trip in Cairns it was very informative the only disappointment was the weather which could not be helped but maybe a change of destination instead of the botanical gardens. Great experience, really first class service, always very willing and helpful.

Crew either went above and beyond or couldn't be bothered at all. As far as service goes, in the main, the overall quality is satisfactory. Most staff members are friendly though some are unresponsive while others are rather inexperienced. The majority either speak excellent English or have a good grasp of the language. Norwegian Dawn, the smallest of the fleet sailing in Europe this summer at 92,250 gross tons, will also spend its summer in Northern Europe.

Passengers' peace is not disturbed by multiple announcements either -- there is just one announcement a day -- at noon, by the captain, telling of the ship's progress. A refurbishment in January 2015 saw the addition of nine single cabins while carpets, mattresses and paint work were replaced or refreshed. Eight new Internet stations were added to the upper floor of the library and awnings were installed at the back of the Lido and Upper Grill Terrace.

If the onboard aura and sentimental pursuits call up the past, so, too does Cunard's cabin category system in which the cabin you're staying in dictates lounge and dining room access. While this might add to the exclusivity of the ship, it isn't exactly a luxury experience. While the main dining food (and even room service) are high quality, there's some of the same nickel-and-diming that you'd find on any other big ship (charging for water in cabins and on shore excursions, for example) -- just in a more polished setting. In typically understated British style, the ship doesn't do glitzy or loud, so ambience overall is modest rather than striking.

A Guide to Australian Beaches

However, they can be worth the money if you’re looking for some privacy and luxury during your trip. These rooms with beds and a private bathroom can typically accommodate two or more people and are usually the most common option on a cruise. The two most popular embarkation points for long cruises to Australia are Los Angeles and San Francisco, but many other cities also provide viable cruise choices. We value all our airline partners providing flights to Australia.

Holland America Line operates two cruises from Fort Lauderdale – the 37-day Grand World Voyage and 42-day Grand World Voyage, both ending in Sydney. Each cruise heads south from Florida through the Caribbean, traverses the Panama Canal and calls at ports in the South Pacific, including Tahiti and Bora Bora. The longer cruise adds a journey down the coast of South America, stopping at ports in Peru and Chile before heading west via Easter Island and Pitcairn Island. Cunard also sails from Fort Lauderdale to Sydney with a 37-night Panama Canal and New Zealand voyage on the Queen Victoria. After passing through the Panama Canal, it heads north to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, then to San Francisco, before following a southwest course through the Hawaiian islands to Tonga, Samoa and New Zealand.

There are cruises from Australia to the United States, but they are fairly rare. Many of the cruises are to Hawaii, and stop at South Pacfic islands along the way. San Francisco is an amazing port to sail out of if you’re looking for a longer cruise to Australia. These cruises typically last around 25+ days and can cost as little as $1,500 per person if you book in advance. This can be a great way to get some alone time on your cruise, or even just to know that your children are being well looked after while you’re enjoying yourself. If you have kids the age of 3-17, most cruises will have a kids club where they can hang out and enjoy activities supervised by trained staff.

Whether you’re after a quick getaway, or a longer holiday you’ll remember forever, an Australian cruise holiday with amazing shore excursions is a great way to relax and take some time out. This trip also provides you with an amazing 13 days at sea, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all the amenities that the cruise ship has to offer without feeling rushed. Port's containership terminal (North Cargo berths 5 and 6) is operated by GT USA. The dredging works removed 22,3+ million ft3 (632,000 m3) of seabed material. For the dredging was contracted Dutra Group (based in San Rafael, California).

On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved. In January 2018 was approved the construction of a new multi-purpose cargo ship berth ("North Cargo Berth 8" / NCB8). By the project were also built a seawall (900 ft / 274 m) and a pier extension (100 ft / 31 m) with capacity to handle vessels with max LOA length 850 ft/259 m. At the new berth can be handled various heavy project cargoes (including aerospace). The USD 17,9 million berth construction contract was awarded to the Tampa-based company Orion Marine Group.

Royal Caribbean emailed me multiple times about this inspection, so I knew it was going to happen. When Voyager of the Seas debuted in 1999, she turned the cruising world upside down. This was the ship that introduced the idea of having an ice-skating rink at sea, rock climbing wall at sea, and indoor promenade. Voyager of the Seas cabins aren’t huge, but with so much fun to be had around the ship, you probably won't be in there much anyway. Combine affordable cabins with loads of free activities and an even number of complimentary and for-a-fee restaurants, and it's no surprise Voyager of the Seas is a hit with budget-conscious travelers.

On Adventure, you will find Splashaway Bay, an aqua park complete with waterslides and splash areas. On Navigator there is a splash pad area with water sprayers. Guests sailing on Voyager, Navigator, and Mariner of the Seas can play laser tag onboard. Also held in Studio B, Battle for Planet Z is a glow-in-the-dark laser tag experience. Guests wear electronic vests and break up into teams to face off in the laser tag arena. Over time, though, Royal Caribbean realized the ships could use some updates.

Overview of Voyager of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas

Relax at Royal Caribbean's spa, onboard gym, fitness courses, boxing ring and jogging track. Royal Caribbean's spa has plenty of relaxing treatments like massages, facials and more. Experience the bliss of cruising of across the Atlantic with intriguing stops along the way on a Transatlantic cruise. Find peace or adventure in the stunning paradises of the South Pacific. Raise a glass to the Mediterranean where you’ll find magnificent churches and castles, along with spectacular food. The history and art are nothing to shake a stick at either.

When it comes to incredible family vacations, nothing beats a Royal Caribbean cruise. These are just a few of the many wow-worthy attractions onboard — there are plenty more thrills, restaurants, and family-friendly experiences to discover during your vacation cruise getaway. Two twin beds that convert to a Royal King size bed, additional bunk beds in separate area, separate sitting area with sofa bed, and a private bathroom with shower. There are a few differences between these two ships when it comes to activities. Voyager of the Seas offers laser tag in Studio B, called Battle for Planet Z. On the other hand, Adventure of the Seas has a Splashaway Bay on the pool deck. This area includes a Baby Splash Zone for kids who are not potty-trained so they can enjoy the pool as well. Two bedrooms with two twin beds that convert to Royal King (one room with third and fourth Pullman beds), balcony, two bathrooms (one with tub) and living area with double sofa bed.

Savour authentic Neapolitan pizza in a cosy trattoria in Naples. Or wander through iconic blue-domed churches in Santorini. Kickstart your weeklong bucket list adventure from Barcelona, Rome or Athens onboard Voyager of the Seas®.

This is because during the Royal Amplification on Voyager, new staterooms were added where the spa and fitness center used to be. Each evening, a "country club casual" dress code applies, and shorts, jeans, deck shoes and tracksuits are all acceptable. Bare feet are only acceptable on the Pool Deck, and bathing suits are not allowed in the restaurants or lounges at any time -- though they can be worn at the Pool Grill and Bar.

Enjoy spa-like comfort in your stateroom, perfect for couples. Mariner of the Seas shares many of the same dining and lounge venues as Navigator of the Seas. During the recent amplification of Voyager of the Seas, the Vitality Spa & Fitness Center as well as Adventure Ocean areas were refurbished and modernized. There is a new outdoor hangout area for teenagers onboard as well.

As implied by its name, our upgraded cabin did indeed feel quite spacious at 211 square feet. Comparatively, our interior cabin would've been 160 square feet. The additional space was noticeable by the window and bed area. Adventure of the Seas may be a much better choice for those with small children who are not yet potty trained because it has a Splashaway Bay. During hot weather vacations, this would be a huge benefit and a factor to consider in your ship selection. I believe because Voyager of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas are so similar, the decision of which ship to cruise on would ultimately come down to the itinerary and price.

Onboard Voyager of the Seas clothing is casual during the day. Evenings dress is either casual, smart casual or formal. On casual nights, suggested clothing is sports shirts and slacks for men and sundresses or pants for women.

Each ship also has a Solarium with a pool and two jacuzzis. The Solarium is not totally enclosed, so the pool is in the sunlight and the jacuzzis are in the shade. The pool chairs in the Solarium are padded for extra comfort. Royal Amplified is Royal Caribbean’s program that updates ships’ amenities, staterooms, dining and lounge choices, activities, and more.

We docked near a charming yet touristy restaurant sitting on a pier and ordered ahi ceviche, delicious if slightly overpriced, while our cabin boy kept delivering us unsolicited drinks from the boat. We ate and boarded, snuck in our last bit of complimentary alcohol and arrived back at port with several hours to explore the town of Oranjestad before we had to leave. Maebh had only ever been snorkeling off the coast of Ireland, so I felt she owed herself a day of Caribbean snorkeling. We and some of our fellow Olivians booked a ship-sponsored excursion with a tour group called Pelican for $59.95 per person.

Your gay cruise will start in Nuremburg, traveling up the stunning Rhine River, making stops in charming towns along the way. Expect great wine and scenery along the way to the party in Amsterdam. Looking for a gay cruise that caters exclusively to the LGBTQ+ audience?

End your day at the Buza Café (if you can find it) watching bold divers leap off the cliffs into the crystalline sea. The lovely fishing port of Rovinj on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula bordered on three sides by the Adriatic Sea. You can tour the maze of cobblestone streets that lead to the hilltop St. Euphemia Cathedral with its towering steeple dominating the skyline. Old Town Rovinj is a delightful tangle of medieval streets and twisting stairways. Seek out the Bronze Age ruins of Monkodonja, the hidden beaches or the breathtaking natural beauty of the 6-mile-long Lim Fjord. Cruise to Turks and Caicos and experience the sugar-white sand, brilliant blue waters, and the kaleidoscopic sea life that is plentiful in the Caribbean paradise.

What made the meal really memorable was the sunset over the ocean right outside our window, enhanced by generous wine flights (for which we paid extra). Yet, despite occasionally feeling out of place, we couldn't help also feeling inspired seeing what our generation owes to the women before us. It was sweet to feel that we were part of a continuum of women, of feminists, or lesbians or whatever else we choose to call ourselves.

This is your chance to get up close and personal with Alaska's stunning natural scenery, indigenous culture and the freshest seafood you can find. Olivia's Majestic Alaska itinerary runs roundtrip from Seattle, with stops at Glacier Bay National Park and charming Sitka. You'll be sailing on Holland America's Eurodam, which has won numerous awards from Cruise Critic's editors over the years. More information will be available approximately 11 months prior to the trip. Optional tours will take you to the archaeological areas of Pompeii and Torre Annunziata, or the 4th century B.C.

Please come back to read about some of the highlights, good times and experiences our travelers are having onboard their Pied Piper LGBTQ group cruises. It’s time to relax, sip a glass of wine or sparkling water and catch up with friends. Get a massage at the spa, sunbathe at the pool, or just sit and enjoy gorgeous views of Adriatic. This is one of Montenegro’s most beautiful bays, and the approach offers one breathtaking fjord-like view after another.

We grabbed our food and relocated to the Captain on the Rocks Island Bar, where a five-piece Caribbean-esque band sang standard wedding-band fare while we downed rum punches. This trip is operated aboard Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator.

We bring a dedicated team of Olivians on every trip, whose number one goal is to create a safe and welcoming space for you. The final night's performers were the original Olivia artists, Meg Christian and Cris Williamson, who have been with the label since its very first release. Simple and easy to sing with ultimate feel-good lyrics, the song filled the room with a total second-wave lesbian sing-along love fest.

Maebh and I ordered cocktails from the bar and settled onto one of the beach beds to watch the ocean waves and the throngs of beautiful Dutch tourists surrounding us. If you only have a day in Curacao, this is a nice, easily accessible place to eat, drink and swim during the day, and party in the evening when the D.J.'s show up. We ate most meals from the Lido Deck buffet, as we found the Manhattan Dining Room to be unremarkable. The Pinnacle Grill, a steak and seafood restaurant, was our favorite of the three. We ordered Caprese salads, which were excellent, followed by mushroom ravioli, which was a little too heavy, but not bad.

Olivia always charters the entire ship, resort, riverboat or land tour so that you can be free to be authentically you while on vacation.
